Energy Efficiency specialists discuss the EPC market in Spain

Publication date: 26 February 2016
Creara, as national leader of Trust EPC activities in Spain, held the first National Discussion Platform meeting at the beginning of February in Madrid.
The purpose of this meeting was to bring together key stakeholders of the EPC market in Spain and foster the dialogue and synergies amongst them. The participants were: A3E, Bureau Veritas, Enertika, Elecnor, Exeleria, Meliã Hotels, Klepierre Management, Suma Capital and Susi Partners.
During this first meeting a market report that contains an analysis of the current situation, the main barriers, and the potential solutions, among others, was presented and discussed. To correctly evaluate barriers and solutions during this analysis, several interviews were performed by Creara staff. The lack of trust, both towards the business model and EPC providers, the lack of knowledge of the business model specifics in tertiary sector and financial institution stakeholders, the constant regulatory changes , and the duration of EPC contracts were the main barriers highlighted in the Spanish market.
As expected, key stakeholders had diverse opinions when evaluating barriers and solutions. However, most specialists shared the opinion that the exhibition of best practices (maybe with the creation of a public database of projects), the development of ad-hoc energy audits in facilities (before signing the EPC contract) and the promotion from public entities through mechanisms such as ‘white certificates’ or ‘carbon taxes’ could concretely foster market development.
