European Commission 2030 Energy Strategy

Publication date: 30 November 2016
Today, the European Commission has released its long-awaited winter energy package, gathering legal proposals on energy policies. The European Union had agreed on EU-wide 2030 targets and policy objectives, based on a 40% emissions reduction, 27% use of renewables, and greater reliance on energy efficiency with at least 27% energy savings compared with the business-as-usual scenario.
These targets aim to help the EU achieve a more competitive, secure and sustainable energy system and to meet its long-term 2050 greenhouse gas reductions target.
This strategy sends a strong signal to the market, encouraging private investment in new pipelines, electricity networks, and low-carbon technology. The targets are based on a thorough economic analysis that measures how to cost-effectively achieve decarbonisation by 2050.
